About Steam-Traced Tubing Bundles

A steam-traced tubing bundle contains a process tube and a separate tube carrying the heating medium, enclosed within insulation and an outer jacket. Heat passes between the paths without mixing their fluids. The separated-tracer arrangement considered here limits direct thermal contact. An electrically heated sampling line instead generates heat with a resistance cable. Passive pre-insulated tubing has no active tracer and only reduces heat loss from the transported fluid.

Give VELHEAT the process duty, heating-utility conditions and connections at both ends.

Product Configurations

Steam-traced instrument bundles

A separate tracer carries steam beside the process tube. Define the steam supply, condensate connection and required process temperature together.

Hot-fluid-traced instrument bundles

A separate tracer carries hot liquid. Specify composition, supply temperature, circulation and return connection. Review materials and pressure separately for the utility and process paths.

Customize for Your Application

Separate process and utility requirements

Discuss each tube material against the fluid it actually carries. A material acceptable for the steam or hot-fluid tracer may not meet the sample's compatibility or cleanliness requirements.

Control the thermal relationship

Define the required separation between tracer and process tube as part of the bundle construction. Evaluate the process temperature against heating-utility conditions and insulation; do not equate steam supply temperature with maintained sample temperature.

Plan end connections and protection

Coordinate process connections, tracer supply and return, insulation termination and outer-jacket seals. Reserve accessible space for these interfaces and identify any exposed tubing that requires additional thermal treatment.

Operating Limits to Check

  • Heating performance depends on the available utility and the complete bundle construction; no fixed output or temperature range follows from the category name.
  • Process and tracer circuits require separate compatibility, pressure and connection assessments.
  • The bundle is a heated transport component; it does not itself establish analyzer performance, emissions compliance or a hazardous-area approval.

Typical Applications

Process analyzer connections

For sample or instrument lines where a plant heating utility is available and temperature maintenance supports the analysis method. Confirm the allowable sample condition with the analyzer specification before choosing the tracing arrangement.

Pressure and flow instrument lines

For instrument impulse lines that need freeze protection or a defined temperature condition. Include the transmitter connection, manifold and process takeoff in the thermal review, not just the length between them.

Flue-gas sampling interfaces

For compatible sampling duties using steam or hot-fluid tracing. Identify the sample's required temperature and the analyzer inlet condition so the bundle does not introduce an unsuitable hot or cold section.

How to Select the Right Configuration

Define what the process line must maintain

Provide the required temperature window and process-tube materials. Explain whether the main concern is freezing, condensation or another change in the transported medium.

Check the heating utility along the route

Record available supply conditions, return arrangements and interruptions during plant startup or shutdown. A suitable utility at the header does not by itself define conditions at the bundle.

Resolve the complete interface drawing

Mark process and tracer connections separately, including end allowances, support points and jacket seals. Confirm which plant equipment handles utility regulation, isolation and monitoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Its tracer receives heat from steam or a hot liquid supplied by the plant. It does not generate that heat with an electric resistance cable. If electrical heating is required along the tube, review an electrically heated sampling line instead. The two approaches have different utility connections and operating responsibilities.
The process tube and tracer tube form separate fluid paths. Their materials, pressure conditions and connections must be specified independently. Heat transfer occurs across the bundle construction; the design does not rely on injecting steam into the sample or process line.
Separation changes the thermal contact and the heat reaching the process tube. Its resulting temperature still depends on the heating medium, construction, heat loss and operating conditions. Separation alone establishes neither a fixed temperature difference nor a universal safe sample temperature.
An insulated tube retains existing heat by reducing loss to its surroundings. An actively traced bundle also receives heat through its separate tracer. A passive insulated line should not be specified as an equivalent heating product when the duty requires an ongoing heat input.
The bundle loses its active heat input. Insulation can reduce the rate of cooling, but it cannot replace the missing utility. Include startup, shutdown and interruption conditions in the operating review, and identify how the process or analyzer responds when the required sample temperature cannot be maintained.
Email VELHEAT the tube schedule, medium, pressure, temperature window and route drawing. Add utility supply conditions, return connections, environmental exposure and instrument interfaces. State the project quantity and documentation needs, and identify the plant equipment outside the bundle supply scope.
Order quantities are agreed for each custom project. Contact VELHEAT with your intended configuration and planned quantity so these can be discussed together.
